Meetings
Meeting Summary for October 9, 2003
Prachi began the third meeting of the UAMUG by talking about the way the iSight giveaway at the end of the meeting would work. He then went over the software updates Apple introduced over the last two weeks, including iCal 1.5, iSync 1.2, and the re-released update for Mac OS X 10.2.8. He then talked about how Apple had announced the release date of Mac OS X 10.3 Panther, the next major update to Mac OS X.
The floor was then given to Stephen Heard for a presentation about peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing. Stephen went over the basics of P2P and then gave a short demonstration of three major P2P software packages: mlMac, Acquisition, and BitTorrent.
Prachi then talked about "The Dark Side of P2P." He highlighted the ethical and legal reasons to avoid P2P file sharing, and then demonstrated several alternatives to P2P, including the iTunes Music Store for music, Half.com for books and DVDs, and open-source, academic discounts, and limited versions for software.
A short Mac Q&A session was given, and then the meeting was concluded with the drawing for the iSight, which Dylan Cobb happily took home.
